Singapore: Burma shouldn't derail EU talks

The Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, says trade negotiations between the European Union and the South East Asian grouping, ASEAN, should not be held hostage by disagreements over Burma.

He was speaking after hosting talks between the two blocs. A joint statement urged the Burmese military government to carry out democratic reforms and release political prisoners.

But there was no agreement on sanctions, which the EU backs and ASEAN opposes. Trade talks between the two blocs began earlier this year.
