Myanmar imposes curfew, declares Yangon 'restricted' area

Earlier, Buddhist monks have led 100 thousand people through Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) for a second day in protest against the ruling military junta.

Loudspeaker announcements on Wednesday in Yangon said the curfew would run from 9pm to 5am local time in Yangon and the second city of Mandalay.

They also said that the city was now under direct control of Yangon's military commander for 60 days.

Witnesses say 11 military trucks were deployed around the city hall. The government earlier used loud speakers warning people not to take part in the protests.

The campaign began after the military government ended subsidies on fuel, leaving many people unable to afford to take a bus.
